The ETHICON VICRYL PLUS (Polyglactin 910) suture is a synthetic, absorbable, braided thread designed for reliable tissue approximation during the critical wound healing period. Water gradually penetrates the filaments, breaking the polymer chain into monomers (lactide and glycolide), which are metabolized into water and carbon dioxide and eliminated via urine and respiration. The hydrophobic nature of lactide slows water entry, prolonging tensile strength during the critical healing phase, while allowing faster mass absorption once support is no longer needed.
