Removing amalgam is not only ecological but also protects the central vacuum pipes by trapping it before it reaches the main system filters, preventing wastewater contamination.

According to Regulation (EU) 2017/852 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 May 2017 on mercury, points 21 and 22:

… a minimum retention efficiency level must be set for amalgam separators. Compliance of amalgam separators should be based on relevant standards, such as the European standard EN ISO 11143:2008. Given the size of the economic operators in the dental sector affected by the introduction of these requirements…

And Article 10.4:

… From 1 January 2019, operators of dental practices that use dental amalgam or remove dental amalgam fillings or extract teeth containing such amalgams shall ensure that their practices have amalgam separators to retain and collect amalgam particles, including those contained in used water …
